Johnny (Joaquin Phoenix) is a good-natured radio journalist, estranged from his sister and suffering from emotional arrested development. Working on a project that keeps him on the road, he travels across the U.S. interviewing children about their hopes and fears for the future.

Due to an extreme personal crisis his sister, Viv (Gaby Hoffmann), asks him to look after her 8-year-old son, Jesse (Woody Norman).

Johnny and his young nephew are thrown together, forging a a delicate but transformative relationship, as they set out on a journey from Los Angeles to New York to New Orleans.

This is a delicate, moving story from writer-director Mike Mills about family dynamics, the connections between us all and the past and the future.
