When her mother is killed, Carmen flees Mexico, making a dangerous and illegal border crossing into the US. There she is almost murdered by a lawless volunteer border guard. His patrol partner, Aidan, saves her but shoots his partner dead. Thrown together by this violent act, Carmen and Aidan make their way north toward LA in search of solace.

In LA they take refuge in the La Sombra nightclub owned by Carmen’s godmother, the effervescent Masilda. As Carmen and Aidan find themselves passionately attracted to one another, they make plans to escape together – but time is running out as the police hunt closes in.

Carmen is a gritty modern-day tale, with a majestic score and dance sequences that evoke magic realism.
