Banel and Adama are two young, passionate lovers living in a remote village in northern Senegal and, for them, nothing else in the world exists. When they decide they want to live away from their families and Adama declines his birth right position of village leader, chaos ensues as drought strikes their community – a perceived judgement for breaking from tradition.

Director Ramata-Toulaye Sy’s astonishing debut film follows the fated lovers in their quest to carve a life for themselves set against a backdrop of suspicion and folklore as village locals correlate their behaviour and the drought befalling their region. This atmospheric exploration of love, obsession and madness is visually stunning, with bursts of colour weaving with magic realism.
