MUSIC: MICK FLANNERY
Saturday 14th December, 2019 - 20:00
€25Mick Flannery is widely regarded as one of the finest singer-songwriters to come out of Ireland in recent years.
He began to write songs as a teenager in his home of Blarney, County Cork. He became the first Irish musician to ever win awards at the International Songwriting Competition in Nashville, aged 19. By the time he turned 21, he had signed to a major label and released his debut album, Evening Train. His critically acclaimed live performances have seen him sell out shows in Ireland’s Olympia Theatre and Cork Opera House and tour internationally.
An award-winning double platinum selling artist, Mick has released five albums to date – including two number ones and received widespread airplay. This show will be a celebration of Mick’s self-titled sixth studio album. Recorded partly in Ireland with Christian Best and partly in Los Angeles with Australian producer Tony Buchen, the new album features Flannery’s trademark hushed musings, big walls of sound, and sharp, insightful and thought-provoking lyrics.
A cliché has it that you have to beware of the quiet ones because most of the time their voices speak sharper and with more range than the loudmouths. Every cliché, however, has a grain of truth in it, and so it’s fair to say that while singer-songwriter Mick Flannery is outwardly reserved, his songs are fluent in expressing layered aspects of the human condition; its flaws, triumphs, and general uncertainty.
Mick Flannery will be supported by American singer-songwriter Mary Bragg. Her new album Violets as Camouflage has been heralded in Rolling Stone and NPR Music, which named it one of the 10 best albums of March 2019: “Her clear, warm alto, reminiscent of Patsy Cline, was made for confidences, and these gorgeously crafted and executed songs touch the listener on a deep level, where insight occurs.”
