Work-in-Progress & Workshop: WATERBIRTH
Friday 24th September, 2021 - 19:00
FREEWaterbirth – A Work-in-Progress Performance
Come and join Darn Skippy Productions for this work-in-progress presentation of Waterbirth, a new play about motherhood and climate change – and join the company live on ZOOM immediately afterwards for a feedback session and creative workshop.
Marina is pregnant and the climate is in crisis. But she’s fine. Everything is fine. She can look after everyone and fix everything, all while practicing her pelvic floor exercises. But as Marina’s body transforms, her sense of reality shifts and all her carefully maintained calm starts to falter. With sea levels rising and her due date approaching, Marina resorts to extreme action to keep her family safe. Waterbirth is a new play by Roseanne Lynch, with original electronic music and sound design by Richard Lennon.
This is an online Work-in-Progress performance of some extracts from the play, supported by a Creative Ireland Bursary from Kildare Arts Office. We will be sharing some key scenes from the play, as well as experimenting with the interaction between movement, music and text. The performance will be pre-recorded at Riverbank Arts Centre and released on the 24th of September.
The early development of Waterbirth was supported by an Arts Council Project Award and an Open Stage Residency at Dunamaise Arts Centre.
Written and Directed by Roseanne Lynch
Music and Musical Direction by Richard Lennon
Movement Direction by Rachel Ní Bhraonáin
Performed by Fiona Lucia McGarry, Rachel Ní Bhraonáin, Richard Lennon and Roseanne Lynch.
The Post Show Discussion and Creative Workshop
After the performance, we will host a Zoom session, where we would love to hear your thoughts, impressions and feedback on what you have seen, and answer any questions you might have about the work. This will be really helpful for us as we continue to develop the play, so we look forward to hearing what you think! After the discussion, there will be a Creative Workshop. This will be an opportunity to explore your relationship with the themes of the play and connect with your creativity. The workshop will be led by the Waterbirth team, who will guide you through a mixture of creative writing, music and movement exercises in a relaxed, fun and supportive way.
Duration circa 90 minutes (extracts 30 mins & workshop 60 mins)
