Therese Belivet (Rooney Mara) spots the beautiful, elegant Carol (Cate Blanchett) perusing the doll displays in a 1950s Manhattan department store. The two women develop a fast bond that becomes a love with complicated consequences.

Carol is a creamily sensuous, richly observed piece of work from director Todd Haynes (Far From Heaven). Based on Patricia Highsmith’s 1952 novel The Price of Salt, about the love affair between a virginal shop girl and the beautiful older married woman, the film is also a clear homage to Brief Encounter.
