Fred (Michael Caine), a retired composer and conductor, and Mick (Harvey Keitel), a film director, are old friends and also in-laws through the marriage of their respective daughter and son.

The two are spending their summer at a luxury Swiss Alps spa, but while Fred is dodging requests from England for him to come out of retirement and perform his greatest work, Mick is struggling to complete his “comeback” film, which is to star his favourite actress Brenda (Jane Fonda).

Once again Oscar-winning director Paolo Sorrentino (The Great Beauty) skillfully uses his actors to present a stylish, funny film of great emotional depth, exploring themes of life experiences and aging, with Caine in particular in sparkling form.
