Afro-Brazilian dance is a joyful form of expression developed from African rhythms & movements. The natural rhythm of a diaspora culture combined with their Yoruba roots took on their own unique forms, transmitted orally through the resilience & powerful spirit of a community. We will be exploring Samba Dance, which is a joyful form of expression developed from African rhythms & movements. The natural rhythm of a diaspora culture combined with the Brazilian “ginga”, finding balance in instability. We will be dancing different styles of samba such as Samba de Roda & Samba-Reggae and other exciting sambas from the north.
This will be a 1 hour long workshop Introduction covering a variety of techniques and encouraging the participants to find their own rhythm within that style. Led by Yves Lorrhan, a professional dancer with 26 years of experience from Northeast Brazil, he has expertise in ballroom, ballet, contemporary, and Afro dance. In Brazil, while working with the dance company Bamberg, Yves developed a show called ‘Balacoxê,’ which explored the profound impacts of African heritage on the culture and expressions of the people of Salvador. It highlighted how these influences continue to shape the movement of black bodies today. Additionally, he was one of the creators and producers of the ‘Encontro de Salao’ festival for three years, which is considered one of Brazil’s most prominent dance festivals.
