SCHOOLS: Bake! by Paul Curley
Wednesday 6th March, 2024 - 10:00
Bake! is a delightful new play for Junior Infants to Second Class students that has moments of interaction woven into the story. The performer relies on the audience to help out with a number of simple tasks that will bring the plot to fruition.
The play is set in the Baker’s Kitchen in the basement of the Queen’s Palace. When the audience arrives into the theatre the ‘kitchen’ is in a mess……
‘there was a storm,
a terrible storm,
blew the place to pieces’
The mood of the lighting at the beginning is low and blue with the odd burst of steam/smoke from the Baker’s ‘oven’. The story-teller sets about clearing up the mess and begins to tell the story of what happened. The lighting gets brighter as the story begins with moments where the audience is also gently lit.
The style of performance is open and engaging and the solo performer is fully aware of the audience present and addresses the story to them directly. The simple interaction involves the children building colour coordinated cakes made from foam discs: sorting by size and colour, to create the ‘birthday-cake’ for the Prince.
The show lasts approx. 40 minutes without interval and is performed by Paul Curley (Polar Bear & Penguin, Grey Matter).
